We'll be in town for a few days and like to take local transit. Is that feasible in San Diego? Not sure how convenient their lines are but I'd like to check it out instead of renting a car if at all possible.

If you stay downtown, you can buy a trolley tour ticket and that'll take you to a lot of the best places in the city. It'll pick you up relatively near your hotel and drop you off in Balboa Park, Old Town and a bunch of other places.

Re: Rent a car or public transit?

If you're planning on staying downtown, you can definitely utilize the city transit. If you want to get up north at all, the trains run really sporadically and probably aren't the best idea.
