My buddies from college and I are all reuniting in San Diego for a weekend. We'll be testing out our surfing skills and want to stay in a reasonable hotel on or within walking distance of the beach. It's always hit or miss with those things, and we don't want to get stuck staying at a really junky hotel (we aren't in college anymore). Any hotel guidance would be greatly appreciated, and any comments on a place to get surf lessons would be awesome too.

You HAVE to stay on the north coast if you’re looking for good surf. You’ll be close to a bunch of famous surf spots and the towns have a really laid back, surfer vibe. I haven’t had any formal surf training, but I did some research when I was considering it and found a bunch of places in the area. I did rent a wetsuit from a store in the area and everyone there was really helpful and friendly, I’m sure they’d be just as easy to get along with in the water. Surf’s up!

Stay at the appropriately named Surfer Beach Hotel if you want to stay closer to the airport. The North Coast is alright but the locals are pretty grouchy about their waves.
