I have nothing but good things to say about The Empress Hotel. I stayed there the weekend of my wedding. Their even coordinator is extremely knowledgeable and did all sorts of little things to make our lives easier, from giving us updates on people who had reserved rooms as part of our wedding to making sure our guests were grouped together in the hotel. They have a very nice free continental breakfast every morning and have a nice patio where one may partake of it. Manhattan, the restaurant and bar downstairs, is a great place with great jazz. The location is very convenient if you are visiting La Jolla. The parking is valet only which some people may have an issue with but I think is reasonable for La Jolla where parking can be tight- the rates are fine, $10/day. I think that for what you pay, the Empress is a steal; most of the hotels in La Jolla are relatively high-end and their rates reflect this. The Empress manages to equal the quality of the other hotels but with very reasonable rates.

We always stay at The Empress whenever we go to visit our son who attends UCSD. Breakfast is included in the rate and the rooms are fab! The hotel is only two blocks up from the ocean where we go in the afternoon and watch the seals and sea lions play. There is a great Thai restaurant a few minutes (walking distance) from this hotel called Kitima that has the best yellow curry chicken I have ever had! Lots of restaurants, bars, and shops all around The Empress. This is one of the few hotels that offers free internet.
