San Diego Public Transportation

While cars are the easiest way to get around, San Diego's public transportation is abundant, relaxing, well-connected, and quick.  You can get almost anywhere, including to and from the many downtown San Diego hotels.

San Diego Trolley

Running through Mission Valley along the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway (SR-94) and I-5, the San Diego Trolley is way to get around San Diego. The Trolley's routes are constantly expanding and it has special schedules to accommodate concerts and sporting events. The trolley does run on a regular schedule. More information can be found here.

San Diego MTS Bus

The San Diego MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) Bus can get you anywhere within the city—and a good deal outside! The MTS has bus stops every few blocks on major streets, and over one hundred routes, including one to and from the San Diego International Airport. Each trip is $2.50 and a Day Pass is $5. Monthly Passes are also available. For maps and times of the MTS Bus System click here.

The Coaster

The Coaster is the major artery of San Diego’s public transit. The route runs along the ocean from Oceanside to San Diego, with stops in Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Old Town, among others. Each train can handle at least 1,000 passengers, so there’s no shortage of seats, and the fare is scaled based on the distance you travel. Take a day trip to the North County Monday through Saturday (the Coaster doesn’t run on Sunday). Check out the Coaster’s times and fares here.
